Tennis equipment guide
A simple tennis racquet buying guide for beginners
The best racquet is not the one used by your favourite professional. It is the one you can swing comfortably, control consistently and keep using as your technique develops.

Equipment matters, but it should support your game rather than become an excuse for every difficult shot. Beginners usually benefit from a forgiving, manageable setup instead of a demanding performance frame.
Choose a weight you can control
A racquet that feels impressive for two swings may become difficult after forty minutes. Look for a weight you can move without squeezing the grip or arriving late. Adults often prefer a manageable middle range, while younger players need a size and weight appropriate to their height and strength.
Use head size for useful forgiveness
A slightly larger head gives more room for imperfect contact. That does not replace technique, but it can make learning less punishing. Very small, demanding frames usually provide little benefit to a new player.
Get the grip size right
A grip that is clearly too large or too small can encourage unnecessary tension. If you are between sizes, it is usually easier to increase a smaller grip slightly than reduce a large one. Comfort and relaxed control are more important than a number printed on the handle.
Do not ignore the strings
Old or overly stiff strings can make a comfortable racquet feel harsh. A beginner does not need the most aggressive professional-style string. A sensible, comfortable setup at a moderate tension is often the better starting point.
If possible, try the racquet. Pay attention to comfort, timing and control—not the best single shot you hit during the test.
Technique still matters more
A new racquet can change feel and forgiveness, but it will not automatically solve spacing, balance or decision-making. Use equipment to support a clear learning plan, then give yourself enough time to adapt.
